Sean Taylor 1983-2007 RIP

The fantasy football phenomenon

As many of us are either preparing for the fantasy playoffs or left just wondering where things went wrong, I just thought I would reminisce a bit on when I got sucked into this fantasy world. This is currently my fifth season participating in fantasy football and while I'm definitly not an expert, I've been around the block enough to have picked up a few things over the years. Five seasons and I have three superbowl appearances with one championship title, one last place finish (ouch, I know..) and I'm currently in first place in my 2007 league and sitting pretty for the playoffs. However, early success is not what keeps bringing me back to fantasy football. Don't get me wrong, I love bragging rights just as much as the next guy (or girl!), but I love this game because it has made me a better fan of football.

I know what you're thinking.. everyone's a fan of football, right? It would almost be considered unAmerican for someone to not be. As a die-hard 49er fan I've had my share of ups and downs (mostly downs lately..) and can spout off niner history with the best of 'em. However, when my friend introduced me to fantasy football five years ago I realized how much of the game I was truely missing. My favorite QB? Joe Montana/Steve Young. My favorite WR? Jerry Rice/Terrel Owens. My favorite RB? Roger Craig. Why? Mostly because they were niners. But playing fantasy football really opened my eyes to the rest of the league's players and not just the ones on my favorite team. The vicious blocking of Hines Ward, the consistent professionalism of players like Marvin Harrison and LT and even the end-zone antics of Chad Johnson all serve to feed my newfound appreciation for the game. Whereas before, if SF wasn't playing then I probably wasn't watching. Now I will watch the stinkiest of stinkers just to watch the players play thanks to fantasy football.
